Reassessing Neocolonial and Imperial Dynamics

Our theme for the month of June is
Neocolonialism, imperialism and agents

As we close this theme, one truth stands out: Africa’s path to independence begins in the mind. The legacy of control is not only political or economic, but also deeply mental. For far too long, Africa’s development has followed someone else’s script. Reversing that trend means rebuilding education, restoring community voices, building economies that reflect African priorities and most importantly, rethinking mental health. Real independence will begin when we believe we can choose our own future and when we have the tools to build it.

Neocolonialism, imperialism and agents

This month’s Policy Paper peels the layers of neocolonial influence in Africa. It looks into how control is maintained without direct rule and how dependency is reinforced through systems that reward alignment with external agendas. Breaking this pattern means looking beyond external pressures to also confront the internal actors and beliefs that uphold them. We are calling for a deeper understanding of power and accountability, one that allows Africa to reclaim its voice, realign its institutions and define development on its own terms.
