As part of The African Federation’s ongoing series on neo-colonialism, the TAF Cameroon Chapter will host a powerful panel discussion exploring how colonial influence continues to shape the nation’s governance structures, long after independence. Register here to participate in this discussion.

Our theme for the month of July is
Neocolonialism, imperialism and agents

Africa cannot defend its interests with institutions that depend on others to function. The AU and regional bodies have struggled to act boldly because they rely heavily on external funding and operate with limited coordination or public accountability. Serious structural reforms are needed: securing domestic funding, clarifying roles, bringing civil society into the process, and enforcing decisions more consistently. What must emerge is an AU with real independence, the internal credibility to lead and the strength to push back when others try to dictate Africa’s path.

This month’s Policy Paper peels the layers of neocolonial influence in Africa. It looks into how control is maintained without direct rule and how dependency is reinforced through systems that reward alignment with external agendas. Breaking this pattern means looking beyond external pressures to also confront the internal actors and beliefs that uphold them. We are calling for a deeper understanding of power and accountability, one that allows Africa to reclaim its voice, realign its institutions and define development on its own terms.

Members of TAF are global members, but affiliated to a Country Chapter. The Country Chapters operate to support the work of TAF Focus Units. In accordance with our charter and to the extent permissible in each jurisdiction, Chapter governance includes an Assembly, Cabinet & Executive Committee.

Head of Research & Policy: Responsible for research-driven implementable-policy development, policy prioritisation, research integrity & quality, inter-Focus Unit research & policy coordination and thought leadership. Requires relevant policy-sector experience.

Head of Engagement: Responsible for impactful delivery of external engagement with & through policy development & implementation stakeholders (including members & partners and TAF commercial business models), inter-Focus Unit engagement coordination and thought leadership. Requires relevant, but not specific policy-sector, experience.

Head of Communications: Responsible for internal & external communications (incl. brand, strategy & execution) for the Focus Unit and intra-TAF coordination. Requires relevant, but not specific policy-sector, experience.

Head of Support Unit: Responsible for strategic & operational finance, governance & controls, legal and HR. Requires relevant, but not specific policy-sector, experience.
