In recent years, West Africa has faced a wave of political instability, from unconstitutional power grabs and coups to growing public disillusionment with democratic institutions. While elections remain a critical part of the democratic process, they are not the whole story. True democracy demands more than casting a vote every few years. Join this conversation and challenge the idea that democracy begins and ends at the ballot box. Be part of that discussion here.

Our theme for the month of July is
Neocolonialism, imperialism and agents

The focus this week is on the role of African youth and grassroots movements in challenging neocolonial systems. Across the continent, young people are organising both online and on the ground, building alliances and pushing back against local and foreign forces that profit from inequality. Their strength lies in numbers, speed and clarity of purpose. With the right support, that strength can shift the balance.

This month’s Policy Paper peels the layers of neocolonial influence in Africa. It looks into how control is maintained without direct rule and how dependency is reinforced through systems that reward alignment with external agendas. Breaking this pattern means looking beyond external pressures to also confront the internal actors and beliefs that uphold them. We are calling for a deeper understanding of power and accountability, one that allows Africa to reclaim its voice, realign its institutions and define development on its own terms.
