TAF Wellness | Overcoming Colonial Legacies
2pm GMT | 3pm WAT | 4pm CAT | 5pm EAT

As Africa reclaims its narrative and reimagines its future, education is at the heart of transformation. This 90-minute virtual session will expose the historical roots of inequality in African education and unpack how structural disparities, rooted in language, geography, gender and economic class continue to persist. Be part of that discussion here

Overcoming Colonial Legacies

Our theme for the month of August is
The ideal education system for Africa - in context of the colonial system

Africa must reimagine education beyond its colonial foundations. Most current systems still reflect foreign priorities, leaving students disconnected from their cultures and unprepared for their realities. The challenge now is to create education that equips learners to build, lead and solve problems in their own communities. That means designing systems rooted in African knowledge, languages and values. Systems that restore dignity, develop critical thinking and prepare young people not only to succeed, but also to transform.

The ideal education system for Africa

This month’s Policy Paper looks at how Africa’s education systems were built under colonial rule and still operate according to priorities that are not our own. The structure, language and content remain tied to a legacy of control rather than empowerment, encouraging memorisation over critical thinking and failing to develop the skills needed to lead and problem-solve. Reclaiming our education will require more than reform. It calls for a complete rethinking of what learning is for. It must be grounded in African realities, guided by African values and designed to prepare learners not just to pass, but to build, question and create.
