TAF Wellness | Decolonising Africa’s Education
2pm GMT | 3pm WAT | 4pm CAT | 5pm EAT

Education is never neutral. It either liberates or it conditions. For far too long, Africa’s curricula have carried the imprint of colonial design, prioritising Eurocentric perspectives while sidelining indigenous knowledge systems, languages and philosophies. This TAF Wellness X-Space will bring together researchers, educators and thought leaders to reimagine education for Africa. Be part of that discussion here

TAF Wellness Decolonising Africa’s Education

Our theme for the month of August is
The ideal education system for Africa - in context of the colonial system

African education still struggles to define its true purpose. In practice, it serves political optics, prepares students for scarce formal jobs and reinforces dependency on foreign systems. Certificates are valued over skills, memorisation over problem-solving and leaving one’s community over building within it. The task now is to create education built on local languages, economies and knowledge, so that learners can thrive where they are, contribute to their communities and engage with the wider world without losing themselves in it.

The ideal education system for Africa

This month’s Policy Paper looks at how Africa’s education systems were built under colonial rule and still operate according to priorities that are not our own. The structure, language and content remain tied to a legacy of control rather than empowerment, encouraging memorisation over critical thinking and failing to develop the skills needed to lead and problem-solve. Reclaiming our education calls for a complete rethinking of what learning is for. It must be grounded in African realities, guided by African values and designed to prepare learners not just to pass, but to build, question and create.
