Our theme for the month of August is
The ideal education system for Africa - in context of the colonial system

African knowledge has always been education. It was taught through stories, apprenticeships with elders, initiation schools and daily activities. Today, building on that heritage requires combining global skills with local wisdom. An education centred on African languages, oral traditions and practical training would connect learners to their communities, value elders as teachers and treat culture as a resource. That is how Africa can build a balanced system that prepares learners for the demands of a global economy without severing them from their own histories, languages and communities.

The ideal education system for Africa

This month’s Policy Paper looks at how Africa’s education systems were built under colonial rule and still operate according to priorities that are not our own. The structure, language and content remain tied to a legacy of control rather than empowerment, encouraging memorisation over critical thinking and failing to develop the skills needed to lead and problem-solve. Reclaiming our education calls for a complete rethinking of what learning is for. It must be grounded in African realities, guided by African values and designed to prepare learners not just to pass, but to build, question and create.
