TAF Narrative Call For Volunteers

Our theme for the month of September is
The ideal education system for Africa - in context of the colonial system

African education still carries the weight of dependency. Instead of being judged by how they serve their own communities, learners are judged by outside standards through curriculums, exams and funding requirements. This cycle drains talent and reinforces dependency. Breaking it will mean financing education from within, valuing indigenous knowledge alongside global skills and creating systems that define excellence in African terms. Only then can education strengthen local capacity.

The ideal education system for Africa

This month’s Policy Paper looks at how Africa’s education systems were built under colonial rule and still operate according to priorities that are not our own. The structure, language and content remain tied to a legacy of control rather than empowerment, encouraging memorisation over critical thinking and failing to develop the skills needed to lead and problem-solve. Reclaiming our education calls for a complete rethinking of what learning is for. It must be grounded in African realities, guided by African values and designed to prepare learners not just to pass, but to build, question and create.
