 African Leadership Spotlight | Joshua M. N. Nkomo Joshua Mqabuko Nyongolo Nkomo, known to many Zimbabweans as Father Zimbabwe and Umdala Wethu, was one of the leading figures in Zimbabwe’s struggle against colonial rule. A trade unionist and nationalist leader, he became the founding leader of the Zimbabwe African People’s Union (ZAPU) and spent years organising politically at home and building international support for African self determination. His long imprisonment by the Rhodesian government did not end his political work. After his release, he continued to lead ZAPU and its armed wing, ZIPRA, through the liberation struggle. Nkomo’s leadership was also strongly tied to the idea of national unity. His nickname Chibwechitedza, meaning “the slippery rock”, reflected his ability to evade the efforts of the colonial authorities to contain him. More importantly, his later political choices showed a continued concern for keeping Zimbabwe together despite deep political divisions. In 1987, he signed the Unity Accord with Robert Mugabe, bringing ZAPU into ZANU PF after years of conflict. His legacy offers an important lesson for African leadership today: political freedom means little without unity, collective responsibility and the ability to put the wider interests of society ahead of personal or political rivalry.
