![]() African Leadership Spotlight | Bai Bureh Kebalai Bai Bureh Kebalai was a leading figure in Sierra Leone’s resistance to British colonial rule. Known as Kebalai, a name associated with his reputation as a tireless warrior, he became ruler of Kasseh in the late nineteenth century. In 1898, he led resistance to the British imposed Hut Tax, which many local chiefs and communities opposed as an attack on their authority and livelihoods. His forces used their knowledge of the terrain to keep colonial troops at bay for months, demonstrating how local organisation and strategic thinking could challenge a better equipped military power. Bai Bureh eventually surrendered in November 1898 and was exiled to the Gold Coast, now Ghana. He returned to Sierra Leone in 1905 and resumed his role as chief of Kasseh. His legacy goes beyond the battlefield. He stood against a colonial administration that sought to impose its laws and taxes on local communities without their consent. His story reminds us that African sovereignty has always depended on people prepared to defend their land, their institutions and their right to determine how their communities are governed. Our Principles - Govern Locally with Eyes on Africa We believe the people of Africa should have the right to live in accordance with our own customs and culture, choosing our own leaders. As such, ours will be an unrestrictive Federation in which the people choose leaders of their own to oversee local governance based on the wishes of local people. The African Federation therefore will have no jurisdiction over any one local administration or its resources, but equally represents and protects the interests of all African realms, regardless of size. When we bring together all African forces and resources as one, Africa is powerful, independent and free.
