On Friday 11 July, The Africa Federation Nigeria Chapter will host a powerful virtual discussion on X titled: Imperialism and the Climate Crisis: Economic Impacts and Local Complicity in Nigeria.
The conversation will take place live on X (formerly Twitter) Spaces and will examine how historical colonial extraction continues to shape Nigeria’s environmental crisis and how internal systems enable its persistence.
Moderated by Gift Erupre, the panel will feature:
Simon Okwori, Head of Environment Focus Unit
Eucharia Onuoha, Focus Unit Coordinator
Together, they will unpack:
- How fossil fuel dependency, rooted in colonial economic design, drives climate vulnerability
- The role of political elites, donor-backed contracts, and public apathy in environmental injustice
- The urgent lessons from the Ogoni struggle and the legacy of Ken Saro-Wiwa
- Pathways to a just transition: climate reparations, local activism, green economy building, and accountability
Audience members will be invited to participate in a live Q&A. This event will challenge both global actors and local institutions to take responsibility for the crisis and offer a bold vision for a future where Nigeria’s environment, economy and people are no longer expendable.
