Mzee Jomo Kenyatta

African Leadership Spotlight | Mzee Jomo Kenyatta

Jomo Kenyatta remains one of the central figures in Kenya’s journey from colonial rule to independence. His 1938 book, Facing Mount Kenya, presented Gikuyu society, culture and systems of governance to an international audience at a time when colonial thinking routinely dismissed African institutions and knowledge. His political work continued through the struggle for independence, his imprisonment during the colonial emergency and his eventual leadership of independent Kenya in 1963.

One of the ideas most closely associated with Kenyatta’s leadership was Harambee, meaning “pull together”. He used it to encourage Kenyans to contribute collectively to building schools, health centres and other community projects, making self help part of the early nation building effort. His legacy is also more complex, with his government criticised over the concentration of political power and unequal outcomes in land redistribution. Still, his emphasis on self reliance, collective responsibility and building a nation with its own resources remains relevant to the question of what African systems can look like when they are designed around African priorities.
