63%

The African Federation (TAF) envisions a future where Africa emerges as a global superpower by 2050, characterised by peace, unity and prosperity. Central to this vision is the imperative to decisively end the cycle of conflict and violence that has plagued the continent for decades. TAF's policy on "Silencing the Guns" reflects a comprehensive approach aimed at addressing the root causes of conflict and promoting sustainable peace across Africa.

TAF emphasises the critical importance of silencing the guns as a top priority for African governments, civil society and citizens. The organisation recognises that the persistent violence and conflicts are major impediments to achieving the continent's full potential. Therefore, TAF is committed to promoting an understanding of the underlying causes of violence, facilitating open discussions on potential remedies and actively working towards peace.

Understanding that the roots of conflict in Africa are deeply historical and systemic, TAF acknowledges the complex nature of these issues. The policy highlights the need to address both the immediate triggers and the underlying structural factors that fuel violence. These include economic disparities, political exclusion, historical grievances and external influences that exploit and deepen tensions for personal or political gain.

A key aspect of TAF's policy is the recognition of the political and economic forces that perpetuate and inflame conflicts. TAF is cognisant of the role of various actors, including local political elites and international stakeholders, who benefit from instability and conflict. TAF aims to disrupt these harmful dynamics and promote accountability and transparency by bringing these issues to the forefront.

TAF's approach on silencing the guns involves several key components:

  • Promotion of inclusive governance: TAF advocates for the establishment of inclusive political systems that ensure representation and participation of all societal groups. TAF aims to address political grievances that often lead to conflict by supporting democratic institutions that are transparent and accountable.
  • Economic development and equity: Addressing economic inequalities is needed for sustainable peace. TAF supports policies that promote equitable economic growth, reduce poverty and create opportunities for all citizens, particularly the youth. We aim to mitigate one of the major drivers of conflict by tackling economic hardship.
  • Regional cooperation and integration: TAF emphasises the importance of regional cooperation in conflict prevention and resolution. TAF seeks to enhance collective security and promote peace across borders by strengthening regional bodies and frameworks such as the African Union's Peace and Security Architecture.
  • Addressing external influences: TAF is committed to reducing the impact of external actors who exploit African conflicts for their gain. This involves advocating for international norms and practices that discourage foreign interference and promote African-led solutions to African problems.
  • Developing a culture of peace: TAF recognises the need to build a culture of peace and non-violence. This involves education and awareness campaigns that promote dialogue, tolerance and reconciliation. TAF aims to build a foundation for lasting peace by changing societal attitudes towards conflict.
  • Strengthening institutions: Effective conflict management requires robust institutions capable of enforcing laws and providing services. TAF supports efforts to build the capacity of national and regional institutions, ensuring they can effectively manage and resolve conflicts.
  • Development of continent-wide civic activism: TAF promotes continent-wide civic activism to empower communities across Africa to advocate for peace and hold accountable those who perpetuate violence. This activism aims to foster a collective effort in promoting peace advocacy and ensuring accountability for malign actors involved in conflicts.

To sum up, TAF envisions a future where Africa can rise as a unified and powerful continent. Achieving this will require promoting inclusive governance, economic equity, regional cooperation, a culture of peace, strong institutions and continent-wide civic activism. The commitment to silencing the guns is not just a policy but a call to action for all Africans to work towards a shared vision of peace and prosperity.
